An island where traces of life from prehistory were found. In the 6th century BC the island was inhabited by Greeks and then in 1 century AD by the Romans. After the 7th century Slavs who inhabited stay on the island afterwards. Throughout the history Korčula was conquered by the Austro – Hungarians, French, English, and they all have left their mark on this island. Larger towns on the island are Korčula, Blato in the inland and Vela Luka to the west of the island. Smaller towns are Lumbarda, Račišće, Žrnovo, Čara, Zavalatica, Smokvica and Brna. The island is abundant with many destinations where visitors can explore the history of the island or to relax and enjoy the beautiful bays and beaches. Korčula is rich with folk traditions from the sword dance Moreška stands out, dating from 17-18 century, Kumpanija old knights dance and Mostra, also dance with swords. During the season there are also various festivals: – Korčula baroque festival, Festival of Marco Polo. It is interesting that there are records from the 15th century that Marco Polo, a famous Venetian merchant, is originating from Korčula. Korčula has an excellent cuisine which is based on Mediterranean style and exceptional wines that will not leave you indifferent.
