Split – the old historic town where first resident was the Emperor Diocletian, who built the imperial luxurious villa of 30,000 sq m in 293 years BC, to which he withdrew after he left the throne of the Roman emperor. Turbulent history after that made a town out of the villa in which they settled residents of nearby towns, fleeing and hiding from the Avars and Slavs. Split saw a number of various authorities, the Hungarians, French, Venetians, the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, who all left behind valuable monuments and historical sites worth visiting. Split now has 19 museums and galleries, among which is difficult to single out any particular because each of them has a great importance on the exhibits or images that are partly a permanent display. The visitor besides the obligatory tour of Diocletian’s villa, which with its Gold, Silver, Iron Gate, Temple of Jupiter, Cathedral of St. Duje and Peristyle and fascinating cellars under Diocletian villa forms one whole. It is also worth the visit to other valuable sites which there are a handful in Split, thanks to its history. Split has many events and during the season every day is filled with some festival, concert, or exhibition, so everyone here can find something for themselves. Split has a large waterfront that dominates the city landscape along many restaurants, konoba’s and cafes where you can relax under palm trees after the city sightseeing.
